Grey Skies 03:20
So sell me now this future On your branded block of wood Rising steeples breathing fire Captains of Industry admired And the engine that thinks it can but not if it should You’re wounded and you’re hungry Staring right into my face Your eyes are tired but your will is strong Sisyphus roll that stone along And pray to hear the chatter say Gimmee, got to get me, gotta get it today Oh grey skies Owe my world to me All these grey skies Owe my world to me So sit beside the fire We’re burning up the past Burning everything that lasts You won’t listen, so it’s embers And chambers And hope someone will rise Who can take us six feet So the smell won’t rise And grey… Oh my, oh my, oh my God Oh my, oh my, oh my, oh my God Oh my, oh my, oh my, oh my God, My God My God My God My God I… Oh grey skies Owe my world to me All these grey skies Owe my world to me

Hours Away 03:20
They paint their faces And walk amongst themselves And try to convince me and everyone else That the paint is so thick That that what’s underneath Is just caked with rot That stings and bleeds I hate this place These circus clowns I am trapped in here And I need out They love their tent Want me to stay But all I want is hours away Angry and awnry Misplaced souls Taught by the liars All that they know That to live without wonder is to live without hope Yeah, suck in despair And die alone I hate this place These circus clowns I am trapped in here And I need out They love their tent Want me to stay But all I want is hours away

Mother Mary Gave me The pieces in the world She said not to do damage To all the pieces in the world [The rest was my odd gibberish, soft glossolalia inspired stuff all riffed over two competing vocal tracks. I had the basic tune but I thought it would be “cool” to leave it as weird dissonant, conflicting vocals. In 2010 I thought this was “artsy”. In 2013 I feel that I should have either left the whole track in its original instrumental form or come up with definitive lyrics. Either way, it what it is. ]

Loom 03:21
I see paper build up to debris I see truth is not just sticks and leaves And we’re faking it all You, me, the whole world So you would think Sometimes.. Even works out Not always.. But I’m back on the loom Never over it now I see people turn into debris And the truth is just more sticks and leaves And we’re building it all You, me, the whole world So you would think Sometimes.. Even works out Not always.. But I’m back on the loom Never over it now

Caligula 04:15
Hello, Caligula Did you love the taste of newborn baby’s flesh? And equestrian tablemates? Oh checkerboard, oh scimitar Save us from no lonely plight Too many mouths that make a mountain And simple gods may keep you warm But I prefer my antichrists Bowie, Crowley and Nietzsche May I go further?

about

Roma was a snapshot of my life in 2010.

Of particular note is that 4 out of 5 tracks were recorded in the back of a 1989 Cadillac Deville. I wasn’t able to practice inside my apartment and so I would drive around my car until I found one of my special “secret” places where I could practice and record. There were a few close calls with security guards but I made it out in one piece.

The tracks were recorded with a Zoom Handy H4 and then edited at home with Logic and a keyboard. The only cringe worthy moment for myself is the track Pieces of the World. It was originally instrumental and I think I should have kept it that way. I thought I was being artsy with these glossolalia inspired vocals but looking back on it now I feel a little embarrassed. Really, two vocal tracks singing slightly off improved lyrics? But hey, one should document the uncomfortable stuff as well I suppose.

My two favorite performances are definitely Grey Skies and Caligula.

The most magical moment was when recording Loom. I had just finished writing it. I was in the backseat of my car by a dumpster. It was probably around 11PM and the rain just started to poor down over my car. So, see if you can hear the rain in the background. Even if the performance wasn’t as good as Grey Skies, it still holds a special moment for me. I quickly turned the guitar over and recorded some tapping “percussion” for the song. It’s a little off but adds a little something. The line “sticks and leaves” comes from one of my professors who kept referring to sticks and leaves as the means of humans trying to puff themselves up and impress each other.

The arrangements are pretty sparse but it bothered me that I couldn’t quite play live what I had recorded. For example, every time I play Caligula live (without the synth horn) it just feels strange. And I don’t want to add loops or god forbid, actually work with other humans. Who’s crazy enough to try that out?

At any rate, I hope you enjoy the recording. It was certainly an experience for me.

All the best-
